The NV DS29 is lightweight and simple to use, it fits neatly in one hand and the controls are easy to operate once you are familiar with the layout. The battery takes about one hour to charge and then you will be filming within a couple of minutes. A cursory glance at the instructions is all that is needed as the basic functions are fairly intuitive.
The camera is equipped with a 10x optical zoom and with a digital option of up to 20x and 500x; both are set via the camera menu. The picture quality declines towards the highest levels of zoom however 20x is likely to be adequate for most needs.
For poor light conditions there is a built-in video light and a 0 Lux Night View function which allows filming in the dark via an infra red sensor--gimmicky but fun. Budding film directors will be pleased to know that there are a series of special effect filters including: mirror, strobe, sepia and picture in picture. Shutter speed, focus and iris can all be adjusted manually but the auto setting is great for everyday filming. The unit also features a Digital Video (FireWire) out socket for direct connection to a computer with the appropriate hardware enabling the user to edit their footage on a home PC.
